Researching the ‘lesser-known’ heart failure

Dr Shane Nanayakkara is a Health Professional Scholarship recipient researching why the hearts of some patients with heart failure cannot allow blood to draw normally into the heart chambers. Half of all heart failure patients have this condition which is medically called heart failure with preserved ejection fraction or HFPEF.

Despite these numbers, there is very little research and understanding of what the condition is, and disappointingly, no single treatment exists to change symptoms or to reduce the chance of going to hospital. Dr Nanayakkara wants to understand the mechanisms behind HFPEF and develop and trial new treatments to help these patients.
