Poor diet is the leading contributor to death and disability from heart disease. This National Nutrition Week (14 – 20 October) the Heart Foundation is asking: “Is your diet really as healthy as you think it is?”

Unlocking the recipe for healthy eating

A recent Heart Foundation survey found that 90 per cent of respondents prepare their meals at home, rather than eating out, and that most of them rely on recipes to do so.

The survey also found that the single biggest factor in selecting a recipe was how healthy it is, rather than ease of cooking or taste.

These findings challenge perceptions around time pressures and convenience being key drivers of poor diet and nutrition.

However, the Heart Foundation's survey also shows that Australians are not eating enough fruit and vegetables, with most of us not eating the recommended minimum of five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit each day.

Delicious steps towards a healthy heart diet

You can adopt a healthy heart diet by eating:

  • Plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains
  • A variety of healthy proteins, including fish and seafood, lean meat and poultry, legumes, nuts and seeds
  • Reduced-fat dairy, such as unflavoured milk and yoghurt, and cheese
  • Healthy fats found in nuts, seeds, avocados, olives and their oils
  • Herbs and spices for flavour, instead of salt.
